2011’s Best American Baseball Players
America features some of the finest athletes in the world today. From hard-hitting football stars to high flying basketball heroes, some of the most famous faces in the world come from the realm of American sports. As popular as football and basketball are, however, baseball is still referred to as America’s pastime. Though the sport is economically light years from its humble beginnings in vacant lots in the 1800’s, the game has remained relatively true to its style, and today’s players are larger than life, just like those from decades ago. Here are some of the best baseball players in America today.
There is a saying in baseball that states good pitching will always outweigh good hitting. Roy Hallady does much to back up this sentiment. The Philadelphia Phillies were fortunate enough to claim the erstwhile Toronto Blue Jay before the start of the 2010 season. Halladay has been tops amongst hurlers in innings pitched multiple times and has improved upon his strikeout totals in each of the past five seasons. Phillies teammate Cliff Lee also knows his way around the pitching mound. He put up most of his wins as a Cleveland Indian, but his ERA has continued to shrink in recent seasons.
Not all of today’s best pitchers play for the Phillies, and Justin Verlander is as good as it gets these days. This career Detroit Tiger has posted a stellar win-loss record ever since his first full season in 2006. Before and after a slight hiccup in 2008, a year in which he led the league in losses, Verlander has been good for at least 17 wins. He is a strong contender to start the All-Star Game for the American League this season.
When it comes to standing in the batter’s box, defending National League MVP Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds can flat out hit the ball. This season, he has struck out slightly more often than usual, but he continues to drive in runners in scoring position. The first baseman is joined by the Milwaukee Brewers’ Prince Fielder as an offensive force at that position. Fielder is a feared power hitter that launches the ball into the stands and drives in runs as well as anyone. His batting average is also rather respectable for a long baller.
Of course, there are numerous other denizens of the diamond that play on another level from mere mortals, but those above are the names you will see in the papers over and over. Children all over the US, as well as many other places on Earth, dream of someday staring down a batter or launching the ball over the wall the way their heroes do at the old ball yard. The best baseball players in America today are the idols of the best baseball players tomorrow.
